He created the minor Internet phenomenon Sad Chewie, as well as a series of animations and music videos for the likes of Vans Shoes, Google, VISA, Geico, IFC, Vice TV, Epitaph Records and Universal Music Group. His TLDR comic by Lukey McGarry is published daily on GoComics. He received a Silver T-Square and three Advertising Illustrator of the Year awards from the National Cartoonist Society.

SOGGETTIVA GALLERY PRESENTS, SINCE TUE 18 APR 2023 THE NEW EXHIBITION PERSPECTIVES: ARTISTIC MOVIE POSTER

A JUMP INTO THE WORLD OF ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN MADE ON THE OCCASION OF THE FUORISALONE OF THE 2023 MILANO DESIGN WEEK.

MILANO DESIGN WEEK 23.

Since Tuesday 18 Apr 2023 the new Exhibition

“PERSPECTIVES: ARTISTIC MOVIE POSTER”

The exhibition brings together over forty unpublished works that explore the many suggestions and inspirations that architecture and interior design have drawn from the world of cinema, exploring the multiple points of contact between the two forms of creativity.

A selection of works of art and Alternative Movie Posters that explore the many suggestions and inspirations that the concept of “space”, with its “interiors” and its “exteriors”, have produced in the world of cinema.

Buildings that have become iconic for having hosted sets of famous films are flanked by architectures created starting from the cinematographic work, cadastral maps of

real cities are accompanied by topographies of imaginary places in an exhibition itinerary that reveals how the fascination of cinematic fiction is able to shape reality and vice versa.

CINEMA INTERIORS

With the Home Sweet Home series, Pascal Witaszek reproduces the floor plans, with attention to the smallest details, of the most famous houses in horror cinema such as The Exorcist and Psycho.

“IN FRONT OF” NEW YORK

George Townley immortalizes the real New York architectures that have become famous for hosting the settings of great classics such as Ghostbusters and The Royal Tenenbaums.

SECTIONS AND FACADES

Max Dalton has “dissected” some houses (from “Parasite” to “Eternal sunshine of the spotless mind“) proposing the most important moments of the film inside them (moving from one room to another). Just as he illustrated the front perspective of the phantasmagoric Neo-Gothic style apartment building in “Rosemary’s Baby” or the facades of the houses on the streets invaded by animals in “The 12 Monkeys Army“

CINEMATOGRAPHIC “ROUTES”

Andrew Degraff, known for his “Cinemaps” and for his work on “illustrated maps”, proposes the “spatial trajectories” that lead the protagonists of the films of Pulp Fiction, King Kong, The Silence of the Lambs, Fargo and Mad Max.

CINEMA EXTERIOR

With his work as a whole, Anthony Petrie almost zooms out from the meticulous interior of Discovery One in “2001 A Space Odyssey” to the radar screen of Liberty Island Security Control in “Escape from New York”, from the Tokyo subway plan in the cult manga “Akira” to the Taxi Service Map of “Taxi Driver“, from the map of the traps in the temple of “Indiana Jones!” until you get further and further away with an orographic map of “The Planet of the Apes“

MOVIE PLANS

From the plans and sections of the houses that formed the backdrop for great cinema cults to urban maps that retrace the key places where the events of Fargo or Pulp Fiction unfold up to the unmistakable skyline of King Kong, PERSPECTIVES: ARTISTIC MOVIE POSTER sheds new light on the spaces that the big screen is capable of producing or reproducing, revealing how the fascination of cinematic fiction is sometimes capable of shaping reality and vice versa.

QUENTIN TARANTINO. Il regista che ama il Cinema (anche quello degli altri)

Da Mercoledì 29 Marzo 2023 la nuova mostra “TARANTINO & FRIENDS”

Più di quaranta artisti da tutto il mondo riuniti negli spazi milanesi di Soggettiva Gallery per celebrare il cinema di Quentin Tarantino e i grandi classici che lo hanno ispirato.

2023. UN ANNO “IMPORTANTE”

Il 27 marzo 2023 festeggia 60 anni e lo fa nel modo migliore. Regalandosi un “tour” mondiale per accompagnare l’uscita del suo ultimo libro “CINEMA SPECULATION” (edito in Italia da La nave di Teseo)

IN ITALIA IL 6 E IL 7 APRILE

I suoi numerosissimi fans italiani avranno l’occasione non solo di leggerlo ma anche di ascoltarlo e vederlo dal vivo. Sarà infatti al Teatro Grande di Brescia il 6 aprile e alla Mondadori Duomo di Milano il 7 aprile.

…E I “COMPLEANNI” SONO DUE

Come non ricordare infatti che proprio quest’anno Kill Bill, tra i film più iconici del regista, festeggia il suo ventennale.

E “CILIEGINA SULLA TORTA”…

Ha annunciato che quest’anno (in autunno) inizieranno le riprese del suo prossimo film. Il decimo (non contando l’episodio di “Four Rooms” e considerando “Kill Bill Vol.1” e “Vol.2” un unico film). E stando alle sue dichiarazioni (che speriamo vengano smentite) dovrebbe essere il suo ultimo lavoro.

…E IL “BUONGIORNO” SI VEDE DAL MATTINO. LE IENE.

La pellicola venne girata in sole cinque settimane nell’estate del 1991 riscuotendo ovunque un grande successo di pubblico e critica. Nel film sono già presenti diverse peculiarità del cinema di Tarantino: l’ambiguità morale dei personaggi, i dialoghi dalle oscenità elaborate e dallo humour devastante, la violenza come nella sequenza della tortura del poliziotto in ostaggio, che però qui appare non “estetizzata”, bensì realistica.

…PIOVONO PREMI. PULP FICTION.

Il successo di LE IENE portò Tarantino alle attenzioni dei produttori di Hollywood: gli vennero offerti numerosi progetti, tra cui “Speed e Men in Black”. Invece Tarantino preferì ritirarsi ad Amsterdam per lavorare alla sceneggiatura di un nuovo film. Il successo di PULP FICTION, la sua seconda pellicola, fu ancora più eclatante del debutto. Il film si aggiudicò la PALMA D’ORO al FESTIVAL DI CANNES e agli OSCAR 1995 vinse la statuetta per la Miglior Sceneggiatura Originale. (oltre alla Nomination per il miglior film). Fu una vera e propria rivoluzione per il “cinema indipendente”.

…”UN PASSO FALSO”? FORSE NO. JACKIE BROWN.

Fu un film inedito per Tarantino che, non eccedendo in esibizionismi come le pellicole precedenti, spiazzò un po’ tutti alla sua uscita. Si tratta di un omaggio al genere cinematografico della “blaxploitation” con Pam Grier, una delle più famose interpreti del genere, nel ruolo della protagonista. Alla sua uscita fu un insuccesso e fu considerato come un passo falso di Tarantino. In seguito venne rivalutato, prendendo atto che il terzo lungometraggio del regista statunitense, seppur lontano dai suoi canoni estetici tipici, è un film ricco di stile, girato con una regia più classica e ricercata.

BANG BANG (My Baby Shot Me Down). KILL BILL

Dopo Jackie Brown, Tarantino si prese una pausa dalla regia durata sei anni, per potersi dedicare a KILL BILL, un suo altro grande progetto, film la cui sceneggiatura fu il regalo di compleanno che Tarantino fece a UMA THURMAN per i suoi 30 anni. L’opera è stilisticamente abbagliante e derivativa rispetto alle fonti più disparate, dai film di kung fu di Hong Kong alle serie televisive, dai revenge movies agli spaghetti-western. Il film può essere considerato un complesso ed elaborato omaggio a tutti i suoi miti e ispiratori.

FILM DA GRINDHOUSE. A PROVA DI MORTE

Dopo il successo di Kill Bill Tarantino, spronato dall’amico Robert Rodriguez, decise di dare vita a un film horror in due episodi: A PROVA DI MORTE, scritto e diretto da Tarantino, uno “slasher” puro e “Planet terror” diretto da Rodriguez, uno zombie-splatter.

Tarantino presentò A prova di morte al Festival di Cannes, ma nonostante le ottime aspettative per il film la pellicola non ottenne il successo sperato. L’intenzione dei registi fu quella di ricreare l’atmosfera dei grindhouse, i piccoli cinema a basso costo degli degli Stati Uniti negli anni 70.

…GLORIA AI “BASTARDI SENZA GLORIA”

Il film venne presentato al Festival di Cannes 2009 ottenendo un ottimo consenso di critica, sia di quella ufficiale sia di quella del pubblico. Divenne il più grande successo commerciale di Tarantino fino a quel momento, con oltre 313 milioni di dollari incassati in tutto il mondo. Il film ricevette otto candidature ai premi Oscar 2010.

SECONDO OSCAR PER DUE. DJANGO UNCHAINED

Il progetto seguente di Quentin Tarantino fu DJANGO UNCHAINED uno spaghetti-western ispirato a Django, il famoso film degli anni sessanta con protagonista Franco Nero. Il film ha incassato complessivamente più di 425 milioni di dollari. Candidato a cinque statuette agli Oscar 2013, Django Unchained ne conquistò due: una vinta da Christoph Waltz come miglior attore non protagonista e una assegnata a Tarantino per la miglior sceneggiatura, riconoscimento che il regista aveva già ottenuto ai tempi di Pulp Fiction.

GRANDISSIMO ENNIO. THE HATEFUL EIGHT

Le proiezioni di THE HATEFUL EIGHT nei cinema statunitensi furono prevista in distribuzione limitata ed esclusivamente nel formato 70 millimetri. Nel 2016 il film vinse un Golden Globe e un OSCAR per la miglior colonna sonora, composta dal nostro ENNIO MORRICONE (al suo primo Oscar per una colonna sonora!!!!)

E ARRIVIAMO ALLA FINE…PER UN PROSSIMO INIZIO. C’ERA UNA VOTA A HOLLYWOOD

…e per tornare a “TARANTINO & FRIENDS”

La mostra prende il via con le rivisitazioni di Adam Juresko, realizzate in collaborazione con Milano Print Makers, e con l’opera su tela che Cristina Stifanic dedica a Kill Bill. Profondamente originale l’interpretazione di Aaron Lea e Cranio Dsgn, che si sono focalizzati sulle colonne sonore dei film di Quentin Tarantino
per realizzare opere che rievocano le copertine dei vinili.

...E NON E’ FINITA

I profili dei protagonisti di Pulp Fiction di Dakota Randall accompagnati dai lavori di Rich Davies, che trasforma i film del regista americano in copertine di libri d’appendice consumate dal
tempo si misurano con l’iconografia ispirata alle miniature sacre di Max Dalton e con le celebri “tavole apparecchiate” che Robin Springett realizza rievocando spunti e personaggi
dei film che interpreta.

...FRIENDS AND MASTERS

Non manca poi una selezione di scorci che esplorano i maestri e i titoli che sono stati fonte di ispirazione per lo stesso Quentin Tarantino. Da Rosemary’s Baby di Roman Polanski, il cui richiamo è evidente nelle pieghe della trama di C’era una volta a… Hollywood ai grandi titoli di David Lynch e John Carpenter, passando attraverso alcuni dei film preferiti del regista quali Lo squalo, Non aprite quella porta e Taxi Driver.

Soggettiva Gallery prosegue con PROSPETTIVE: ARTISTIC MOVIE POSTER,
l’originale affondo nel mondo del design che la galleria presenta in occasione del Salone
Internazionale del Mobile e del Design.

Dal 17 al 23 aprile 2023, Soggettiva Gallery ospita una selezione di opere d’arte e Alternative Movie Poster che esplorano le molte suggestioni e ispirazioni che l’architettura e l’interior design hanno
tratto dal mondo del cinema. Edifici divenuti iconici per aver ospitato set di film famosi sono affiancati da architetture realizzate proprio a partire dall’opera cinematografica, mappe catastali di
città reali si accompagnano a topografie di luoghi immaginari in un percorso espositivo che rivela come il fascino della finzione cinematografica sia in grado di plasmare la realtà e viceversa.

In occasione di Prospettive: Artistic Movie Poster, Soggettiva Gallery estende i propri orari di apertura.

Dal 17 al 23 aprile 2023 gli spazi di Via Sottocorno 5/A saranno aperti al pubblico dalle 14.00 alle 22.00.

Andrew DeGraff is a freelance illustrator and artist who lives and works in Maine. He is a graduate of the Pratt Institute’s Communications Design program with a major in illustration. He teaches illustration at the Maine College of Art & Design. In 2018 he published his second book, Cinemaps: An Atlas of 35 Great Movies from Quirk Books which won the Frankfurter Buchmesse Awards for “Best Illustrated Book on Film”.
